Republican National Convention Highlights: Trump’s First Appearance, Unity, and Benign Red Meat
The first night of the Republican National Convention was full of high energy and memorable moments, from Trump’s first public appearance since the attempted assassination at his rally to the powerful speeches by various speakers.
One of the highlights of the night was when Trump entered the venue to raucous cheers, wearing a bandage over his right ear. The crowd erupted into excitement as Lee Greenwood performed “God Bless the U.S.A.,” a song played at every Trump rally. Emotions ran high, with even Donald Trump Jr. getting emotional during the performance. Trump’s only remarks were a simple “thank you” to attendees before settling in next to his running mate, JD Vance, and Rep. Byron Donalds.
Another notable moment was the benediction delivered by Pastor James Roemke, who imitated Trump by saying, “You’re gonna be so blessed, you’re gonna be tired of being blessed.” The convention proceedings came to a close with Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin'” playing as Trump exited.
Two key speeches of the night were given by Sean O’Brien, the Teamsters president. O’Brien criticized Trump’s record on unions and took aim at Republicans who oppose labor unions. Despite receiving a lukewarm reaction from some delegates, O’Brien highlighted the need for both parties to fight for everyday Americans and emphasized that “elites have no party.”
Additionally, the AFL-CIO criticized Trump’s record on unions, while Kamala Harris aimed to sway GOP women as Trump and Vance’s ticket took shape. Business owners and retirees also spoke out in support of the Trump administration’s economic policies, praising Trump’s impact on their lives.
Overall, the first night of the Republican convention aimed for unity but also delivered some of the old “red meat.” It set the tone for what promises to be an eventful and engaging week ahead.
