Fact Check: Trump’s Record Unemployment Rates for Black, Hispanic, Asian Americans, and Women

In a recent address at the convention, Lara Trump, daughter-in-law of former President Donald Trump and co-chair of the Republican Party, highlighted the record low unemployment rates for African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Asian Americans, and women during Trump’s presidency. But is this claim entirely accurate?

While it is true that under the Trump administration, record low unemployment rates were achieved for these demographics, it is essential to note that President Biden has matched or even surpassed most of these records. For example, the Black unemployment rate hit a record low of 5.3% in September 2019, but under Biden, it fell to 4.8% in April 2023. Similarly, the Hispanic unemployment rate reached a record low of 3.9% in September 2019, a mark that was matched during the Biden administration in September 2022.

When it comes to Asian Americans, the claim does hold up based on the data available. However, the data for Asian unemployment only goes back to 2000, and in April 2019, the rate was just 2.1%. As for women, while the record low unemployment rate was set in February 1953 at 2.5%, both the Trump and Biden administrations saw a low of 3.1%. It is important to note that more women are now seeking work compared to the 1950s.

Overall, Lara Trump’s statement is mostly accurate, but it is crucial to consider the full context and recognize that President Biden has also made significant strides in maintaining low unemployment rates for these demographics.
